Automated welding is any welding process where certain motions of the welding arc are manipulated by a machine, rather than a person. The chief advantage of such welding is the ability to complete more weld cycles in a given time through higher air cut speeds, and through the advantage of predictability of weld quality. The most basic type of automation consists of some basic machine motion imparted to the welding torch or the weldment.
