Electrodes

Arc welding uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the base material to melt the metals at the welding point. They can use either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current, and consumable or non-consumable electrodes. There are many different types of electrodes used in the shielded metal arc welding, (SMAW) process. Arc welding electrodes are identified using the A.W.S, (American Welding Society) numbering system and are made in sizes from 1/16 to 5/16.

Wire is used in wire feed processes such as gas metal arc and flux core welding and offers higher productivity, inspite of being more expensive than arc welding equipment of the same capabilities.
