Abrasives

For industrial application, abrasives are materials from a select group of very hard minerals used to shape, finish, or polish other materials. In processes that grind, finish, polish, lap, or hone, abrasives are typically limited to synthetic minerals with the exception to diamond and garnet. Common abrasive minerals appear in various crystalline forms of aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, zirconium oxide, diamond and cubic boron nitride.

Choice Of Abrasive

The shape, size and nature of the workpiece and the desired finish will influence the choice of the abrasive used. An abrasive which is too hard or too coarse can remove too much material or leave undesired scratch marks. Also, different shapes of adhesive may make it harder to abrade certain areas of the workpiece. Other very important considerations are price and availability.
